Growing Potatoes

When to Plant Potatoes - Cold weather crop in Zone 4, April and May.  Can be planted as soon as the soil can be worked up.

How to Plant Potatoes - Dig hole 4 to 5 inches deep.  Put potato eyes up, cover.  Plant 18 inches apart, in row.  To cut up seed potatoes – cut spud in quarters, be sure there is an eye (sprout) for each piece.  Do not use store potatoes, they are sprayed so they will not grow..

After Planting Potatoes - When the plants flowers they will start to form potatoes in the ground, about mid-July.  You can scratch around the plant and pick 1 or 2 egg size spuds.  Put soil back around plant so the rest of the potatoes keep growing.

There are sometimes potato bugs.  Pick them off and drown them.  Look for orange eggs under leaves, smash them.  There is an organic spray I use for potato bugs.

Harvesting Potatoes - In August you should be able to dig the whole plant and harvest the potatoes.  Enjoy!
