At the Farm Newsletter

Sent January 26, 2011

The sun dogs are shining.
The earth is sound asleep.

A wild turkey came calling,
So spring can't be buried too deep!

Hello,

I'm working on adding an update to my book, Gardening According to Donna. Learning to can is what this new section is all about. So many would like to learn the art of putting food by (canning) it makes sense to add it to my gardening book.

I would like your input about what you would like to learn to can. The book will cover methods of preparing food for canning, tools of the trade, equipment you need, etc. What else should I include?

Learning the art of canning can be very rewarding. Enjoying the summer harvest again during our long winter is just the best! And to have your own tomatoes instead of buying a can at the grocery store is wonderful. Look at all the salt in the commerically canned product. I don't add any salt to my canned whole tomatoes. I add the salt to the tomato dish when I use the tomatoes.

The jam or jelly you make will have the best flavor. Making pickles has to be the number one process people want to learn. And I just love to teach you! I will be doing a seminar on the art of canning at the Business, Home & Family Expo April 2, 2011 at the Waconia High School. Don't know the time yet but will let you know in another newsletter. It's a Chamber of Commerce event.

Let me know what I you would like to see in the canning addendum to my gardening book. Reminder, I have eggs available most of the time now. Call ahead to make sure

Love to hear from you!
Donna

It's Popcorn Time!

1/2 cup popcorn (from At the Farm)

2 tablespoons shortening

Pop the corn in a kettle or popper like the one shown at right.

Then put in a large pan or bowl when popped.

Melt 6 tablespoons of butter

Drizzle butter over popcorn

Stir

Salt to taste

Enjoy!

Tip: Keep unpopped corn in refrigerator.
The moisture keeps the 'pop' in the kernel.

I have my homegrown organic popcorn for sale.

Please call ahead 952-442-4816.

I'll have it in the house for you.
