Garden Tips - It's Harvest Time! Have you dug your onions yet? It's time! If you leave them in the field and we get a lot of fall rain they will start to regrow. Then they will not store well.
Put onions on a table in your garage to dry. (see photo) When dry, cut off the stem to store. Store dry onions in a cardboard box or paper bag. |
|
Potatoes - If the greens are dry you should dig. Dry in your garage, then put in cardboard box or paper bag to
keep. Don't wash, they store better with a bit of soil on them. Just rub them as clean as you can. You can store potatoes and onions in your garage until it gets too cold. Then bring into basement or another
cool place.Carrots and beets can be left in the ground until you need them or when you till your garden for winter. To know when your winter squash is ready to harvest put your
thumbnail into the shell by the stem. If it dents or sinks into the shell it's too green, don't pick. Thsi season will be a challenge for harvest to store. If your product doesn't keep I believe it's the
season. Next year will be better! Be sure to clean all old garden plants out of the garden in the fall. Put in compost or mulch pits. Then rent a tiller and turn the soil for over winter. The
ground will be better in spring for gardening. When you care enough to Grow the very best, ask Donna!
