Soil! Soil! Soil! How to know when its okay to be working in the garden? Take a handful of soil and squeeze it. If it stays in a mudball, keep out! It needs to dry out more. Soil
needs to crumble between your fingers. If you dig too soon the clumps will never crumble. You will pay the fiddler all season! Look at how nice and dry the soil is in the field when Dan and I were planting
potatoes a year or two back. When the soil is right you need to spade it over or till it. Add fertilizer if you wish, then spade it in too. Bone meal is great for perennial
flowers in the spring. You can put a half cup around each plant and scratch it in or just leave it on top of the ground. The rail will wash it in. Bone meal is for strong roots. |
 Have Fun in the Soil!
