September Harvesting Tips! Onions
- You can pull your onions if the tops have fallen over. If the tops are green but have fallen over, you can pull
them. Wipe off soil and put in garage to dry. Some people hang them but I just put on screens or wood bench. (see
photo above) When tops are brown cut them off. Put in a paper bag or cardboard box and cover with newspaper or
paper towels. If onions are left in the garden they regrow with all the fall rains then they will not store very well. Potatoes
- If tops are brown you should dig them. Wipe off soil, lay them out for a while in the garage. Cover with
newspaper or paper towels so they will not turn green. Put them in paper bag or cardboard box and keep covered. Can be left in garage until its too cold. Then bring in or they will freeze. Carrots - You can leave in the ground while you use them. When ready to put your garden to bed for the winter, dig them up and store in the refrigerator.
Winter Squash - When you push your thumbnail into shell and it does not dent or go in they are ready to pick. This
season with the cool weather it may take a long time to ripen. Even when the color is right, test with your thumbnail. Peppers
- When frost is in the forecast you need to pick them. They will not make it through a frost. Put in refrigerator to keep or you can freeze them, just clean out seeds and chop.
Tomatoes - Some times you can cover plants with a sheet to keep the frost off or you can pick them and put in
cardboard box. Cover them with newspaper or paper towels. They will ripen. They do not have all the flavor of vine ripened but still better than shipped in! When you care enough to Grow the Very Best, ask Donna! |
