July Garden and Harvest Tips!

Got something eating your almost-ripe tomatoes? Could be a chipmunk looking for water. Set a small dish of water by the plant to see if it helps.

Onions - You can be using them now for salads, burgers or whatever. Its time! (See photo at right with some that I've picked.) The tops will fall over and then they will start to cure off to store. Pull onions about August 17-20. Dry them off on a table in the garage. Then box them in a card board box to store. Take then in the house before it freezes. If your tops do not fall over take the rake and push them over. If they do not dry they will not keep.

Potatoes - They should be big enough to use. Dig the whole plant or scratch around the plant to find the big ones. Your greens will die down in August. Then dig the potatoes and store in cardboard box or paper bags, not plastic. Put in garage until it freezes. Keep light off the potatoes. They will turn green in the light. Do not eat them if green.

Cooking Tip for Sweet Corn!

Do not add sugar or salt to water. Bring water to a boil.

Add 6 ears or less of corn (from At the Farm). Bring the water back to a boil and then cook for 4 more minutes.

Use two kettles if you have a lot of corn to cook.

Enjoy!
